Whether you're buying, selling or merely curious about a saxophone, a very useful piece of information is the saxophone’s serial number. According to Saxquest.com, a saxophone's serial number can be used to find out when the instrument was made as well as occasionally where it was made and by whom. All genuine name-brand saxophones have readily findable serial numbers. If you cannot find yours, chances are reasonably good it is not actually a product made by the company whose name it caries.

Feb 16, 2012  While trying to determine exactly when my S20 tenor was built, I came across this chart, which is listed on Conn-Selmer's website: King Serial Number Chart Date Serial Number 1883-1915 1-50,000 1915-1925 50,000-78,000 1925-1930 78,001-128,000 1930-1935 126,001-161,000 1935-1940 161,001-220,000 1940-1945 220,001-275,000. There is a fairly detailed record of these instruments recorded in a log book in the Selmer archives in Paris up to 1936 through serial number 1364. The record is much less complete after 1936. Instruments manufactured after 1936 range in serial number from 1350-3600.

There is a serial number chart on the Selmer website which breaks the serial numbers down by year but doesn’t go into detail about the types of saxophones made nor how many. I always wondered how many Selmer Super Balanced Action (SBA) tenor saxophones there were and according to this, there were 9,100 made of which I have one. It is probable that the Standard horns were made with tooling from earlier models of SML. For example, Standard models with a Rev. B serial number (e.g. 509x) have Rev. A features, including left hand bell keys. SML made a large amount of stencils for such a small company (at least six; the most famous and numerous being the King Marigaux). Look below the thumb rest. According to Saxophone.org, the most common location of a saxophone’s serial number is just below the thumb rest. The thumb rest is a wide plastic or metal hook located about six inches below the place where the main body of the saxophone attaches to the neck.

Check inside and under the bell if the serial number is not below the thumb rest. The area around the bell's rim (either inside or out) will be a good place to check, as the number may be imprinted there.

Check the area around any inscribed designs, messages or the brand names. Serial numbers are not typically stamped there, but these areas are worth checking.

Check any documentation that came with your saxophone. While these documents may be difficult to tie directly to the saxophone–as they are exterior to the instrument–a questionable serial number is preferable to none at all, and perhaps you can find a listing for your serial number that indicates why the number would not be stamped on the instrument itself.

Contact the person that has sold or is selling the instrument to see if they have any further information concerning the serial number's location or absence.

Do not confuse the model number with the serial number. A model number is typically shorter and may have a word in it. Serial numbers are typically longer and are comprised mostly of numbers. For example, a famous saxophone model number is MarkVI, while the serial number could look like 103000.

There are multiple companies that make trombones, a brass instrument characterized by a sliding piece on the front end (see picture). These companies -- Bach, Conn and Yamaha, just to name a few -- all have different designs for their instrument, and each style has its own corresponding model number. While the model number is not printed on the individual instrument, there are several methods of determining this information.

Local the manufacturer's logo or insignia on your trombone. Different manufacturers have different logos, and print these logos at various locations on the instrument; for example, the King Instruments company prints a crown on the outside base of the trombone's bell (the flared part of the instrument from where the sound comes). A Conn trombone prints the word 'CONN' on the round part of the third brace (the short, straight metal rod nearest the back of the instrument). Once you know who manufactured your trombone, you will be able to narrow down your search for the instrument's model number.

Take note of the different features on your trombone. Is it composed of brass (which will have a golden color) or sterling silver? Measure the diameter of the bell, as this is a key measurement often used to distinguish trombones. Look to see if the trombone is operated by a slide -- as most traditional trombones are -- or by valves, like you'd find on a trumpet (Reference 1).

Visit the manufacturer's website and look for its 'trombone' section. Some companies will list their different trombone models online, while others will have a downloadable PDF catalogue. This is the information for which you are looking.

Regardless of your trombone's manufacturer, the serial number should be located on the piece of metal where the slide attaches to the rest of the instrument (Reference 2).
